Five Sports Leagues Seek Betting Bans for Threats

Five major U.S. sports leagues and their players associations are asking gambling regulators to permanently ban bettors who threaten or harass athletes, coaches, officials or their families. The joint request would turn abusive behavior into a direct betting consequence: lose access to legal sportsbooks, potentially for life.

The request crosses league lines

The Associated Press reported that the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and Major League Soccer joined with their players associations in a letter to regulators in 35 states and the District of Columbia. The groups argued that threats tied to wagers have become a growing safety problem as legal sports betting has expanded.

This is broader than a complaint from one athlete after one bad game. Rival leagues and unions are asking regulators to create a common penalty that follows the bettor rather than leaving each incident to a team, platform or individual state.

Some states already use similar penalties

AP reported that only a small number of states currently have rules designed to exclude bettors who threaten or harass sports participants. The leagues want that approach expanded so a person who crosses the line cannot simply move to another legal betting platform or jurisdiction.

The requested bans would not replace criminal law where a threat rises to that level. Instead, they would add a sports-betting consequence controlled by regulators: the person could lose the privilege of placing legal wagers.

Betting has changed how fans can reach players

The leagues said expanded betting has increased the intensity of some fan interactions, particularly when individual player performances affect a wager. Athletes have repeatedly described receiving angry messages from bettors after games, sometimes involving family members.

The new proposal is an attempt to connect that behavior to the activity that helped trigger it. If regulators adopt the request, the rule would be simple enough for casual fans to understand: threatening someone over a bet could mean losing the ability to bet legally at all. The next question is whether states will agree to make that penalty consistent across the country.
