Judge Dismisses Matt Kalil Suit Over Ex-Wife Remarks

A federal judge has dismissed former NFL lineman Matt Kalil’s lawsuit against his ex-wife Haley Kalil over personal comments she made about their marriage during a livestream. The case was dismissed with prejudice and on the merits, giving the unusual dispute a clear legal outcome even as Kalil’s attorneys say they plan to appeal.

The judge focused on Haley Kalil’s right to tell her story

The Sept. 17 order from U.S. District Judge Patrick Schiltz says Haley Kalil’s comments were made while discussing her own marriage, divorce and personal experience. The judge concluded that the remarks involved a matter of legitimate public concern and therefore did not support Matt Kalil’s invasion-of-privacy claim.

The court also dismissed his unjust-enrichment claim. The written order makes clear that the ruling was based on the legal status of the speech, not on a finding about whether every personal detail discussed in the livestream was tasteful or necessary.

The lawsuit followed a viral livestream

People reported that Matt Kalil sued after his former wife discussed intimate details from their nearly seven-year marriage during a November 2025 Twitch livestream. He argued that the comments led to unwanted attention and public embarrassment.

Haley Kalil sought dismissal, arguing that she had been talking about her own experiences and the marriage they shared. The judge agreed with her legal position and ended the case at the district-court level.

An NFL name became part of a broader privacy case

Kalil was the fourth overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft and played for the Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans before retiring in 2019. That background helped turn what might otherwise have been a private dispute between former spouses into a widely followed sports and social-media story.

The next step could be an appeal, which Kalil’s legal team has said it intends to pursue. For now, however, the federal court’s order is decisive: the lawsuit has been dismissed with prejudice, and the district-court case is over unless a higher court changes the result.
