Lionel Richie Has Heart Procedure, Cancels Shows

Lionel Richie is taking time away from the stage after undergoing a heart procedure for atrial fibrillation, a common irregular heart rhythm. A representative for the 77-year-old singer told People the procedure went well and said Richie is doing well, but needs time to recover.

The health update has an immediate consequence for fans: three scheduled performances with Earth, Wind & Fire were canceled, including dates in San Francisco, Chicago and Columbus.

The procedure follows earlier health interruptions

Richie’s representative described the treatment as a common procedure for atrial fibrillation. People reported that Richie had already dealt with several health-related interruptions this year, including cardiac testing after an August hospitalization and earlier concerts affected by dizziness.

Those earlier episodes make the newest development more significant than a routine schedule change. The current pause follows a confirmed medical procedure rather than a vague statement that the singer needs rest.

The canceled dates make the recovery visible

The Sept. 26 San Francisco show, Sept. 30 Chicago performance and Oct. 2 Columbus date were canceled because of Richie’s hospitalization and recovery. His representative said he plans to return to the stage after taking time off.

The statement did not suggest that Richie is retiring, and his team did not announce that all future appearances were ending. The confirmed change is a temporary pause tied to the procedure and the immediate cancellation of several concerts.

Richie has spent decades as a touring star

Richie’s career stretches from the Commodores through a solo run that produced songs such as Hello and All Night Long. He has remained a familiar live performer well into his seventies, which is why a medical interruption during an active tour carries more weight than an ordinary celebrity health note.

The singer has also been visible to a newer generation through television and major public events, extending recognition well beyond listeners who first knew him in the 1970s and 1980s.
